“…..I have always used the Norwood Hair Loss Scale for Men as well as the Hamilton Hair Loss Grading System for Women as an important part of my initial consultation with new patients. I find it very revealing in regard to a patient’s overall assessment of his/her hair loss. More to the point: how they see themselves. Typically there is a strong element of denial with respect to the amount of hair loss. This denial needs to be addressed with directness but yet with sensitivity to the patient’s genuine sense of loss. Patients can become very emotional at this time. I stress to my patients that HELP IS AT HAND. Throughout my career I have taken pride in knowing that I have always offered my patients the Gold Standard of care. Today that Gold Standard in hair restoration is Follicular Unit Transplantation [FUT] wherein hair follicles are selected and harvested as they grow naturally in 1, 2, 3 and even 4 hair groupings or units. I can say in all candors that I was one of the first hair transplant specialists in Beverly Hills to embrace the FUT procedure and have spent many hours during many thousands of procedures refining my technique. An important refinement in my practice is the attention paid to the appropriate use of hair texture. In other words finer, more delicate hair is placed where it is indicated, specifically at the hairline, and hair grafts of a coarser texture with more hairs per graft behind the hairline to build density. I have always stressed that it is not enough to merely place single hair grafts at the hairline. We must instead create those single hair grafts using the finest hair available which will in turn allow me to create the softest and most natural looking hairline. This attention to detail is, frankly, how I have built my reputation in Beverly Hills as well as internationally.
More recently another method of obtaining the follicular has been popularized. This technique is referred to as Follicular Unit Extraction [FUE] whereby the grafts are removed one at a time as opposed to removing a segment [strip] of donor material. We, of course, offer both the FUT as well as the FUE techniques. Both techniques offer advantages as well as potential disadvantages. Both offer the same results of the highest quality that I have always enjoyed being able to produce. I will be happy to discuss both options with you and make a recommendation as to what I feel is the best approach for you…..”
It may seem strange that Dr. Kenneth Siporin, a board-certified plastic surgeon, dislikes the term "anti-aging." Plastic surgeons, after all, make their living by smoothing wrinkles, restoring youthful hairlines, and tightening slackening contours. And Dr. Siporin, who was trained at Chicago Medical School and had an office on Rodeo Drive, is certainly skillful at helping his patients maintain a youthful appearance. But Dr. Siporin is not a typical plastic surgeon.
"Age isn't something to be feared; it's something to be embraced," he says. "This does not mean you cannot be proactive about your health, nor does it imply that you should not make physical changes in an attempt to maintain a youthful look. There is, however, a right and a wrong way to go about it."
According to Dr. Siporin, the "right way" to preserve one's youthful appearance and vitality is what he calls "age optimization." Instead of fighting aging with quick-fix cosmetic solutions, which often result in cruel caricatures of one's original beauty (does anyone look good, let alone younger, with a too-tight complexion?), Dr. Siporin believes in making the most of your real age. "Instead of trying desperately to look younger, why not actually feel younger inside and out? By optimizing your health, bringing your hormones into balance, fighting stress, and yes, choosing the plastic surgery procedures that make us look and feel better, you can optimize your current age and love every minute of it."
Imagine the power of realizing your potential. Imagine loving the present and looking forward to the future instead of longing for lost years. Imagine being the best possible example of yourself and discovering how wonderful you can feel here and now. "There is no magic elixir, but I do hope to share my own personal youth formula," says Dr. Siporin. "I look forward to beginning the dialogue."
Dr. Siporin's Education and Training:
Raised in Southern California, Dr. Siporin received a Master of Science degree from Stanford University, then went on to earn his medical degree at Chicago Medical School. He spent the next five years at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles as a Chief Resident in General Surgery, where he tended to many of the most severely ill and complex surgical patients. In this setting, Dr. Siporin received excellent training in trauma, critical care and surgical oncology. He continued his post-graduate training in a general plastic surgery residency at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, which was followed by two plastic surgery fellowships; the first at Boston University, where he specialized in hand and breast surgery, and finally, an aesthethic fellowship at the Davies Medical Center, a UC-San Francisco affiliate. Here, he performed hundreds of facial aesthetic surgeries under the direct tutelage of one of the country's preeminent cosmetic plastic surgeons, Dr. John Q. Owsley.
